MSNBC edits Romney rally speech
to portray candidate as out of touch
MSNBC is taking heat again for selective editing a day after presenting video of Mitt Romney seemingly awestruck by the process of ordering a sandwich at a convenience store.
During an afternoon broadcast of “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” video of the GOP presidential candidate seemed to show a politician out of touch as he discussed ordering a hoagie at Wawa.
“It’s amazing,” Romney said, as the Pennsylvania crowd appeared to laugh. Then viewers saw Romney say, “You have a touchtone keypad, and you touch that, touch this, go pay the cashier, there’s your sandwich.”
What viewers didn’t see or hear was nearly three minutes of Romney discussing the nightmare of paperwork faced by an optometrist he’d talked to in trying to get the post office to change his address. He expressed mock amazement at Wawa’s efficiency to underscore how the private sector often runs circles around the clumsy bureaucracy.
“We went to Wawas and it was instructive to me, because I saw the difference between the private sector and the governmental sector. People who work in government are good people and I respect what they do, but you see, the challenge with government is that it doesn’t have competition,” Romney said in a portion edited out of the segment.
A laugh track spliced in from another part of the speech allowed the left-leaning news network to further mock Romney.
But Mitchell invoked an old campaign stumble by George Bush, who famously marveled at a supermarket scanner during his failed 1992 re-election bid, thus demonstrating in the eyes of some that he was out of touch with the lives of everyday Americans.
Representatives for the Romney campaign declined to comment, but officials from the Romney camp had reached out to the Peacock Network, which promised they would correct the issue.
At the opening of Tuesday’s show, Mitchell addressed criticism over the misleading edits.
“There’s been a lot of discussion about a conversation you and I had yesterday, Mitchell said to MSNBC contributor Chris Cillizza, “We ran clips of Mitt Romney in Cornwall, Pa., talking about his trip to a Wawa.”
“The RNC and the campaign both reached out to us saying that Romney had more to say about that visit, about federal bureaucracy and innovation in the private sector,” she added before playing the unedited clip from the rally.
Officials for NBC Universal, which owns MSNBC, did not immediately return a request for comment.
Last August, Ed Schultz of MSNBC played an edited clip in which then-presidential candidate Rick Perry described the national debt as a “big black cloud that hangs over America” to make it sound like a racial dig at President Obama. Schultz later apologized.
And in March, NBC was caught editing the audio of George Zimmerman’s 911 call as he watched Trayvon Martin in the minutes before he fatally shot the Florida teen. On a tape edited and played on the “Today” show, Zimmerman was heard calling Martin “suspicious” and volunteering that he was “black.” But the full, unedited tape showed that Zimmerman only mentioned Martin’s race when asked by the dispatcher. The result made it sound like Zimmerman was racially profiling Martin. The network fired three people after getting widespread criticism.

The FCC should take this Corrupt Propaganda (News) Agency off the Air !!!!!

It is outrageous, but I draw the line at asking that they be taken off the air. The left does that all the time with Fox News because they don’t like what they hear. I won’t stoop to their level.

I understand what you are saying but the FCC does have certain rules and MSNBC has a history of these kinds of distortions.
We have to draw a line in the sand somewhere

I believe that the private sector will determine the success or failure of any corporation.
At least that’s the way it is supposed to work.
General Electric owns NBC, and MSNBC, and didn’t pay any taxes last year. Hmmm.
General Electric owns NBC because it bought RCA, the company that started NBC.
After GE owned RCA and thence had the rights to NBC, GE dumped RCA and retained NBC.
Much has been said about the progressive agenda.
Believe me,…it exists.
100 years of efforts have not fallen on fallow ground.
The above example proves it.
Systematic steps in the private sector and the government have produced the dilemma we find ourselves in today.
What we are witnessing is not due to happenstance.
Rather, it is due to the fact that we have let down our guard.
The subtle siren song of the left has lured the ship too close to the rocks.
The sirens are waiting for the ignorant to steer the ship even closer.
What will it take people ?
Run the ship up on the rocks ?
Strand Her ?
The Tea Party is in the crow’s nest and will not allow America to perish on the rocks.
The conservative bloggers are on the shore waving off the ship.
America is indeed a Mighty Ship.
We cannot and will not allow Her to be taken down by the likes of those that seek to destroy Her.
Never, ever.

America is truly a mighty ship in danger of running aground in these rough seas we see today.
I think we are seeing the beginnings of a migration in that the American people are now turning from network news and scouring the blogs for real news stories they won’t fine on the MSM.

MSNBC‘s Andrea Mitchell Doesn’t Apologize for Taking Romney Out of Context — Plays More of Clip Instead
You can’t even call this half-hearted.
Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday did not apologize for heavily editing a clip of Mitt Romney (hear her original edit here) talking about a Wawa gas station at a recent campaign stop. Instead, she made an excuse, saying she didn’t get a “chance” to play the whole thing on Monday and played more of the clip to try and soften the blow meant to portray him as out of touch:
The clip Mitchell played Tuesday does offer a little more context, but it should be noted that Mitchell — after laughing at it yesterday — did not take the time to explain the full context: Romney was discussing how private enterprise is more efficient than government.
And all this raises the question: If it was simply a case of Mitchell not having the “chance” to play the full clip on Monday, then why did she even play it in the first place? If the point was to have a fair discussion on Romney and his statements, then there would be no question that she and her team would have played the full clip and given the context.
But I think we know the points wasn’t a fair discussion. It was to get a cheap laugh and mock the former governor. And they achieved their goal.
This time they just got caught.

I wonder how many people are actually being fooled by this. While this was so blatant, even other news channels wouldn’t touch it, there are still a lot voters out there who only hear these types of stories, and actually buy into this rhetoric. I read some posts the other day by people who live in other countries, and all they hear is this type of news, along with the negative stories about the “racist” tea party. They have no idea what the tea party is really about. What a disservice these so-called journalists are doing to not only the American people, but others around the world. They carry so much responsibility for the situation we’re in right now.

Peacock pride: NBC ignores ‘Wawagate’ furor
Two days after one of its highest-profile news anchors played manipulated video that made Mitt Romney appear out of touch with everyday voters, NBC officials seem content to let the controversy die down without an apology or explanation.
Other than issuing a terse, one-sentence statement late Tuesday afternoon, NBC has virtually ignored what the blogosphere dubbed “Wawagate.” The carefully-edited segment, aired on Monday’s edition of “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” spliced together a Romney speech, making it appear that he was expressing genuine amazement at a convenience store’s use of technology to take sandwich orders. In reality, he was facetiously comparing the tech-savvy private sector to the clumsy government bureaucracy.
“All standards have gone out the window,” said Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center, which compared the edited MSNBC clip to unedited video of the rally on YouTube.
“They are editing at will and it doesn’t matter that they are caught. My guess is that they will continue to do it,” Bozell added.
Former MSNBC anchor David Shuster said the network should have owned up to its mistake.
“Covering up Wawa video is bad for accuracy,” said Shuster, who was guest hosting for Bill Press on MSNBC competitor Current TV. “Digging in their heels, they have made this, instead of a one-day story, a three-day story,” he said.
Writing in Investor’s Business Daily, Andrew Malcolm recalled similar distortions aimed at Dan Quayle and President George Bush.
“The repetitive media meme for Republicans is ‘out of touch,’” Malcolm wrote. “Well, this may be the best/worst one yet.”
Still, the network declined to comment on Wednesday, apparently standing on a Tuesday statement denying any wrongdoing.
“MSNBC did not edit anything out of order or out of sequence and at no time did we intend to deceive our viewers,” NBC spokeswoman Lauren Skowronski said in a written statement provided to FoxNews.com.
Romney’s comment came on a Pennsylvania campaign stop in which he discussed ordering a sandwich at convenience chain Wawa.
“It’s amazing,” Romney said, as the Pennsylvania crowd appeared to laugh. Then viewers saw Romney say, “You have a touchtone keypad, and you touch that, touch this, go pay the cashier, there’s your sandwich. It’s amazing.”
